From Melbourne (Mum): 17th August 1981

Dear Alan,
I have enclosed a cutting from yesterday’s press. I know you have only been there a short time but you still would have an idea whether it is right about Soweto. We just heard last week Fiona is travelling overseas next year for a year to do more study in Architecture. She is going by herself. Katherine is also going overseas too but she will be only gone for three months. She is also going by herself and is going to do a one month course in Paris on the French Language. She is going to resign[AC1]  at end of this year from teaching in Roman Catholic schools. Maybe when she comes back she will try to get a job teaching French in secondary schools.

It is certainly better to travel before you get too settled and being married doesn’t seem to have stopped Fiona and Katherine doing just what they want to.

Yesterday Beverley wrote letters off to see if she could get a job while she is finding out about nursing so she is really looking for a job that she wants to do for short time. Dad and Ray got their ticket for the football finals last week. Ray got up at 4 o’clock in the morning to queue. Melbourne is on the bottom and Footscray is next.

Colin at last went into the Navy about 2 weeks ago. For the past 3 months he is just probationary living down HMAS Cerebus (I think that the name). He does the same training as everyone else and is not allowed out but he is allowed either once a week or a month. When the 3 months is up @ he is approved then he starts training as a medical orderly. He must be very keen because the place he worked at doubled his wages and offered him a house to stay but he still wanted to be a medical worker. For the first time since they were married Evelyn and Bill are living by themselves. Ian lives in Western Australia at present. I suppose that will happen to us one day and it might not be so long if Lois got a school in the country and Beverley goes nursing.  There will be no more arguments but it will be very quiet. Pamela is home most weekends and the place is twice as noisy.  She still hasn’t found a flat to live in so she is making do with her friend who is getting married in November so she has only 2 months to find something .

Darryl is living back at Ray’s now. He wants to save some money. He has friends who are in the Democrat party at his place. The first he has been interested in politics and he is enjoying. Last week were council elections (not in Sunshine) and he was a scrutineer at Williamstown. If he keeps going like this he will be standing for parliament one day.

Darryl had a dinner party for all his family. Glen was in Melbourne for a conference with his wife. Sharen and Bill cane for tea. Darryl did all the cooking and arrangements. Everything worked out well. Mrs Dawson is an awful cook so some of the meals are not very good. Claire wasn’t at the dinner party.  She just looks after herself. Glen has applied for a job teaching at the air force base in Malaya so he could be leaving Australia if he gets the job.

Next week is the school holidays. I really don’t see how I am going to do all the things that I would do but I will try. I have ordered 70 trees from the forest commission at Macedon. They will take several days to plant. I couldn’t possible plant them by myself. Banding like that is the worst thing for my back. It hasn’t hurt much for ages but I am careful what I do.

I am writing this at the Kindergarten and the Brownies will here soon so this will have to do now.

                Love from Mum.
