From Johannesburg: December 1981

Johannesburg

Dear Mum et al,
I posted a X-mas present which should arrive late in January. I think it is intrinsically African. It’s a piece of handicraft emanating from North Transvaal. The images are very simplistic and colorful which is characteristic of the blacks.

In the veldt a few weeks ago we found some bushman paintings on some rocks. They were all very simple uniformly red drawings of animals.  In the bush the idea is to see/glimpse game before it runs away. At night everybody talks about politics which is the national obsession while listening to the monkeys.

Apropos Pamela if she comes to Africa she should spend some weeks/time in SA. In Joberg there is not much for the tourist except the local people but there are a lot of things in SA you could see. You would have to go to Kenya, Zambia before coming here. Such is politics, Zimbabwe is not a problem.
                                              Regards Alan
