Dear Mum,
Here are two tickets from Joberg to Richards bay on 23.4.84 at 7:40 am. Check in 45 min before the flight. I will meet you at Richards Bay.

At the airport you will need SA rand you are best to get them at the airport as soon as you land. Then book into a hotel adjacent to the airport. When you are in the country you can ring me on… if you have any problems.

If you have any room can you bring some old khaki shorts or trousers or old notes (cons, pros, oral surgery). Maybe a newspaper too.

                                                                Regards Alan

Dear Alan,
What you suggest in your letter sounds quiet good. Pietermaritzburg seems to be the center of many of the interesting places in South Africa.

We are not whether we will be able to drive in one day down to there. We will try but if we feel tired (we will both take turns driving) after our plane trip we will stop and spend the night in a town along the way and then come to Pietermaritzburg in the morning. We are not sure how we will feel after our plane flight. Don’t forget I haven’t been in a plane since before I was married.

Could you please book a flight from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls and back in the last week. Best to be back in Johan before Sunday 20th May when we leave. I know Johannesburg is not really a tourist town but I suppose we should have a look around it for one day.  But as I said previously I think the people of South Africa are the most interesting part of the country. I am about half way through Scramble for Africa and have finished North of South and before that the Life and Times of Michael K which won the Booker award this year. It is set in Capetown and on the edge of the Karoo. Wasn’t a bad story. The history of SA is very complicated much different from Australia.

I just thought about Victoria Falls seeing that we are coming all this way we will have to see them some way if you can’t book as I said would you please do it some other way.

Just happened to see a program last night (a repeat) on the white rhino in the Umfolozi Game reserve. It was an Attenborough program.

I am just sending this off quickly so it should catch the weekend plane. Later I will send a longer letter.

Dear Mum,
This is what I think is the best.

Monday 23/4 – Hire car travel to Natal
Tuesday to Sunday –Stay in Natal with me. Can visit some game parks.
Monday 30/4 – Hire car travel down coast the whole day.
Tuesday 1/5 – Stop Mountain Zebra National Park (near Port Elizabeth)
Wednesday 2/5 – Stop Addo Elephant National Park
Thursday/Friday 3 &4/5 – Stop Tsitsikamma Coastal Park
Sat/Sun/Mon – Travel down garden route to Capetown. There is a lot to see here.
Tuesday – Capetown
Wednesday – Capetown
Thursday – Capetown
Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu – Can do anything. Can fly back to Natal or go to Lesotho
Fri/Sat/Sun – visit Vic Falls and then depart from Zimbabwe
I should be able to take time off between 24/4 to 27/4 and 14/5 to 18/5.

You will have to hire a car & drive down to Capetown on your own. I have already booked the National Parks. These places are hard to get into. As for the hotels that you would need a booking anywhere. There are hotels by the airport. You can’t help but finish up in one of these. You need Rands (get at airport in Joberg) and to hire a car to drive down here (on Monday). I can’t see how I can come up to Joberg.

Can you tell me what you think? I think you need some things booked and some time in which to be flexible with no arrangements.

If you can’t book a flight from Durban or Joberg to Vic Falls then tell me and I can easily do it. I will book a flight from Capetown to Durban about the 11/5.

Can you let me know what you think? Yesterday I swam in this one mile swim at a dam. There were 2,500 competitors. I don’t know why these schoolchildren swim so well but they do. Better than me.

Dear Alan,
When I got home tonight there was your letter giving us some more news.
We have been trying to work out the best way to see the Victoria Falls as you say we could be better to go at the end of our holiday. We have booked to leave Johannesburg on Sunday 20th of May to arrive in Harare 5:30.

What we would like if possible to go to Victoria Falls for a couple of days then go to Harare but from here it doesn’t look possible. If you can’t do this from SA could you please book us a trip to the Victoria Falls from Johannesburg and to return to Johannesburg to be back in time to catch the plane on Sunday 20th May. There seem to be plenty of tours to the falls from SA one about 2 days should be enough.

Even though you couldn’t get tickets on the Blue Train (I am not surprised most of the pamphlets say you need to book about 1 year ahead but I thought it was worth a try) we would still like to go to Capetown. Dad is getting an International license because we had thought that was a good idea too.

We think it might be better to go to Capetown by another train or bus. You will not be able to be with us for long especially if you are going to a new job. Could you please book us a trip to Capetown the way you think would be in the time we have or if you think it is better to hire a car for long trips. We are thinking of using a car for shorter trips but you would know about a car for longer trips. We are leaving most of the arranging to you because we feel you know best and you know how many free days you have.

Since you haven’t mentioned it I guess you were able to book us in at a game reserve. Could you please let us know how much money we would need to bring. We were thinking of bringing $2000 each for everything except our air fare to and from. We could bring some more. Do you think that is enough. Dad seems that the Kruger game reserve is the best. I am not so sure I will leave it to you.

I am still reading books about SA. I wouldn’t be surprised if I know more about their history than some people who live there. But I am still learning.

If you know any person who could help you I would like to visit some kindergartens both for white and black children. I could bring photos of the children I work with and take some photos back to show the children here. This depends on who you got to know. We would also like to go to an ordinary church service maybe even a Baptist church if there are any. We are just as interested or more in meeting the people as well as seeing the country.

You should get two letters today never mind we need to send them early in the week or they seem to miss to mail. Yours took a fortnight to get here. They nearly always do.

                                                                                Love from Mum

Dear Alan,
I think the governments Australian & South Africa make it as complicated as they can for people to travel between. I suppose it will work out alright but at the moment we don’t seem to be getting anywhere.

We don’t know what we will be doing and where we will be saying when we arrive in Johannesburg. We arrive at the airport at 9:20 pm on Sunday 22nd April flight Sa 35. Do you think we should book into a hotel there for a few days until we see you or will you be at the airport.  We have to put on our visa where we are going to be staying. I think we will have to guess or give your address which might not be the right address anyhow. We will try and arrange to see Victoria Falls from here but you will not be able to be with us all the time so what else should we do here.

Do you want us to bring something from Australia for you either something to do with dentistry or something purely Australian. I think we will have plenty of room.  We haven’t got many clothes to wear and we thought if we find we need something we ca can buy it in South Africa. It’s not as if we are going to the ends of the earth or though you would some times think it was.

I go back to work next week but it has been a pleasant holiday not too hot. I took the chance in the holiday to have a few visitors or go out. I did start to clean up the place but didn’t get very far. Beverley was here Monday and Anne was here yesterday and I am going shopping with Pamela today. It is raining at the moment. I have only had to water the new trees at Trentham once this summer because we have had enough rain and not too much hot weather. I do hope we get everything sorted out as I am looking forward to seeing you and a different country @ people.

Dear Mum,
I tried to book The Blue Train but it’s well and truly booked out. It’s impossible to get on at such short notice. Anything else can be done. You should cancel the return flight from Joberg to Harare. It might be best if I booked thee flights to Zimbabwe but if you can do it it’s okay. If you can’t then tell me and also tell me the return flight No from Harare to Perth.

You definitely need an International travel license plus your local license.  For RSA you need to apply in writing for a visiting visa. Any other countries a visa can be obtained at the border.
Vaccinations – I don’t think any are required.

If you want to do any reading you have to get some history books. The History of RSA, The Boer War, The Scramble for Africa.

I don’t know which is the best but if you don’t know any of the history you know nothing.

I hope to be in Natal shortly but I don’t know when I’m moving. It should be in February but don’t worry about such things.

                                Regards Alan

Dear Alan,
You should have had word from your mother that we are interested in taking a trip to South Africa and we are now stating to make plans. A provisional booking has been made to leave here on Easter Sunday (22nd April) and stay for four weeks. That seems the best time from several points of view; the weather should be reasonably good and it won’t interfere too much with the kindergarten or work situations. Your mother mentioned several of the main things we would like to see but of course the important thing is to get as broad a view of SA life as possible. We would like to hear from you as soon as possible regarding what arrangements you can make over there. We have been reading a few books on South Africa and gaining as much information as possible. Some of the books paint a mixture of a strange land indeed. However it would be an experience to be able to judge for ourselves and it would be sensible to leave any preconceptions behind before we travel. South Africa often appears in the news here but usually in an unfavorable light.   There has been quite a bit this week concerning possible overtures to the Australian cricketers who retired last week, Dennis Lillee and Greg Chappell. Whether they go in not certain but there has been mention of hugh sums of money which could entice them. I think the South Africans would consider it a great coup to get a team of Australian cricketers over there but there seems little chance of that happening. From press reports the tour of the rebel West Indians seems to have had some problems and not been as successful as the South Africans had hoped.

Cricket has been big news lately with the tests against Pakistan and the one-day matches just starting against Pakistan and the West Indies. The Australians were clearly the better team in the tests and won 2-0 but the Paks did not have the best of luck. Poor leadership and team selection did not help the Paks. We did see one day of the Melbourne Test and it was good cricket indeed although we nearly all got sunburnt.

I added to the sunburn by working outside at Trentham, much to my discomfort for several days.

The big job at Trentham this year has been to cope with the extraordinary growth of grass – the greatest we have seen there. After last year’s scare with the bushfires it is very necessary to keep the grass down at this time of year.  It is almost unbelievable to see the grass and compare it with the bare earth after the fires less than a year ago. Above average rain in the winter and spring just transform everything.

It has been a fascinating experience to watch the regeneration of the forest over the first six months. The Australian bush is amazingly resilient and in some aspects is improved by fire. We have never seen wildflowers in such profusion as we have seen this year and that has happened in all the fire areas. Most of the trees will recover and it has been a strange sight to see the growth commencing along the trunks or at the bottom. It will be several years before the scares of the fires are erased and the animal and bird life returns but improvement so far has been remarkable. We have taken photographs of the forest at various intervals since the fires and they make quite an interesting comparison when set in juxtaposition. Your mother is arranging them in an album.

Mainly due to the necessity to concentrate on grass cutting we had a quiet Christmas. We hope you had a pleasant time.   Only outings have been to the cricket and a film. We saw the Australian film “Phar Lap” the other day and it was quiet a good effort; nothing cerebral but entertaining and well made. That raises the question whether any films are made in South Africa; if so we never hear about them.  Australian films have become big time overseas and deservedly so in some cases. Are they screened in SA?

Things are quiet at home at present, Beverley has been on holidays in Canberra and Sydney returning tomorrow.

Cousin Glenn returns to Australia next week and will stay with Ray until he gets an appointment. Glenn and his wife have been to Europe for his holidays and I believe even made it to Russia for a few days.

We are looking forward to a busy year in 1984 (ominous date) especially if we make the trip to SA. Business is steady and we can go on for a while yet but it may not be long before we have to think of shutting the door.

Happy new year and kindest regards Dad

Dear Alan,
Christmas holidays have disrupted us a bit and it is a while since I have written. We had Christmas day at home Lois, Beverley and Pamela and Ray were here for lunch. Ray went to Sharene’s for tea and Ken came to tea. The next day Beverley, Dad, Lois and Ken went to the test between Pakistan and Australia. You should have seen them when they got home. It had been a dull cool day but the four of them were burnt on the face. They had hats on so it must have been the wind. Beverley and Dad got blisters on their faces. Dad put cream on his face and got some block out cream. He put this on when we went up to Trentham but instead of getting better his face all swelled up and he didn’t feel too good. He didn’t get better until we realised he must be allergic to the cream and didn’t put anymore on.
Anne, Dennis and Ben came for tea on Boxing Day. We couldn’t have everyone all together or there would have been arguments but having two Christmases it worked out alright.
We have started getting things in order to come to South Africa we are getting passports in the next few days.  We should be getting all the information from the travel agent but it hasn’t come yet. We will not actually book anything from here until we hear from you what is the best things to do and see.
It has taken a long time for Dad to realise it but he has at last decided he can go away for a few weeks and the place will not fall down. Not before time.
We saw Joe and Audrey last week. They are just back from a holiday in Europe. They stayed with Joe’s mother in Hungary, they stayed with a brother in Switzerland another brother in Denmark then they stayed with a cousin of Audrey’s in England.  At least ¼ of their photos were taken when they were sitting around a table eating.
Evelyn and Bill are coming for tea tomorrow night. They had a good holiday in New Zealand when they went to Ian’s wedding.
It really is about time we went travelling too.

Dear Alan,
Just a short note to tell you what we have done.

I went in to see the travel agent we have been dealing with on the first day after school finished.

There were two vacancies for South Africa on Sunday 22nd April (this is Easter Sunday). We couldn’t get on SAA but Qantas had vacancies to Harare then a connection to Johannesburg. We also had to book the return seats but these can be altered. The return seats are in four weeks’ time 20th May.

We haven’t booked for anything in South Africa yet because we thought you would know what was best to see and where to stay but there are three things we would like to do if possible. See the Victoria falls, see an  animal reserve and go in the train one way from Capetown up @ down the table mountain to Johannesburg or across to East Africa. If you can book these things from where you are could you please do it now and we will send the money over or pay when we get there. If you cannot do these from where you are would you please let us know and we will do what we can here. There are so many animal reserves and hey differ at different times of the year you should know which one or ones are better in April May.

In all the pamphlets the tourist bureaus give out the black people and the homelands are just ignored. Is this because they do not want us to see them or they are not worth seeing. I know you said that at Christmas time you would be very busy. Just find out what you can do when you have time. Please remember we don’t want to be rushing around all the time sometimes we would like to stay in one place to get the feel of the place. We won’t do anything more over here until we hear from you. We have to finalise and pay our fees at least 1 month before the due date.

Dear Alan,
Yesterday we received a letter about your renewal of your Dental registration in Victoria. It doesn’t matter whether you are in Victoria or overseas but they have sent you a form to be filled in. it has to be paid by 31st Dec. We could guess the answers but it would help if you could tell us how many hours on an average you work each week.

What is the main sort of work that you do?

Also what type of practice i.e. where you work and who pays you.
If you let us know soon we will fix up the renewal.

I think Beverley was a little disappointed you didn’t send her some little thing for her birthday. She has written a poem about you in Africa but she won’t let me read it I just saw it by chance. I think she would like just some little thing that is African maybe a book of stones by black Africans if there is such a thing. She was pleased when Pamela sent her a book by a Canadian woman writer. It needed be a book but just something from Africa different from what she can get here. Last week we had another form but you didn’t have to fill it in because you were overseas It was a general survey of dentists in Australia to see how much work they did and what sort of work. It seemed to be trying to find out where there were too many dentists and where there were not enough but you didn’t have to fill it in.

I think you completely misunderstood something. I never had any intention of working in Australia. I was talking about RSA.  Ever since I’ve been in Butterworth another man and I have been trying to organize something here (in Butterworth) but it is so difficult and complicated.

He wants to work around Queenstown. I want to work in Natal (Empangeni or Pietermaritzburg).   So far as I am concerned you could come over any time you wanted. It doesn’t worry me. Anything you do is up to you and that’s all. Finish and klaar.

Dear Alan,
We just received a letter from you on Friday. They take about a fortnight to get here. I am sure you could get to almost anywhere else in the world in less time. You mentioned you were not sure how long you were going to stay there. You have been listening to other people. You are the only person who can decide what you will do. From outside South Africa it does seem to me that it doesn’t matter which place you are in they are all potentially dangerous. But so are lots of other places. You could come back to Australia work as suburban dentist with nothing more exciting than crying children. Do you think you are ready for that yet. I have found over the years it is better to work out a problem yourself, listen to other people, all different points of view but you have to do what you feel is right. Whenever I have done something because some-one else says I should or because I find it is what other people feel and not what I have really thought was right for me at the time it hasn’t all had the best result. One thing I do know if we only do something because of the money we can get we are not happy too long. It is always better to go where we are needed provided we can stay alive. No use going anywhere if we don’t survive.

We were not going to come for Christmas – we just can’t get any seats. We won’t do anything about traveling now. You just do what you feel is best and maybe one day we may go overseas. It would be nice but not that important.

Graeme Roberts is getting married soon. He is teaching near Bendigo and is going to live up near there. I don’t know who he is marrying.

There has been a lot in the paper the last week about the referendum in South Africa. All the editorials seem to think it is a move in the right way even if a very slow change. I see the Capetown and Natal which I think have the most colored @ Indians gave the highest yes vote. Must mean something. Also Transvaal the lowest vote. Was there a lot of talk over there about it. We have had more about South Africa in the last week than we have seen for ages. Beverley cooked lunch today – Paul (her boyfriend) was here too. She used a recipe from the South African cook book. Worked out quite nice. She is in the middle of her exams but feels she is going alright.

Dear Alan,
Hope everything is going alright where you are. We still are seeing in the papers and hearing about the drought and the lack of food all down the east coast of Africa. South Africa is not usually mentioned but all the other countries are included including Lesotho and Swaziland so it still can’t be too good where you are.

I just sent a parcel by surface mail which should reach you by Christmas. Hope it does. It’s very hard to know what to send and no-one has any ideas. You do what you like with the items keep some for yourself and give some of them away if you like.

Pamela has already sent us two cards one from Toronto and one from Montreal didn’t tell us very much but we know that she is there.  Also send over a couple of Canadian books for Beverley’s and my birthday. Last Friday night which was the actual day of her birthday Dad and I and Auntie Grace and Win took Beverley with us to a rather posh restaurant in Footscray (yes there is one!). It was very nice but a bit dear not the sort of place you could afford very often. We might have a get together of some of our relatives after Beverley has finished exams and Pamela is back. I’m not sure how it is going to work seeing that Pamela, Lois and Anne are not talking to each other. Well we can try!

Had afternoon tea last Sunday at Auntie Grace’s when Evelyn and Bill were there with Jenny and her baby. He’s a year old now and just walking. Evelyn and Bill are off to New Zealand in Nov to see Ian and to have a holiday touring around too. Evelyn is reasonably well but she had to take everything slowly.

We haven’t made any arrangements yet about next year because we are still waiting to hear whether you think it alright. If not we will not come.

I see in today’s paper that 2 groups that are prohibited in South Africa are going to be allowed to have offices in Australia – SWAPO and another group of Africans  I can’t remember the initials but it starts with NA. Looks like it getting harder to get to South Africa.

Last week there were elections in Queensland and everybody was saying that Bjelke was finished but he won with his own party –Liberals were slaughtered – Labor made few gains. What everybody thinks of  Bjelke he certainly knows how to manipulate the system and he over 70.

Sometimes when everybody you meet tells you the same thing then they may be right. Everybody tells me I should get out of the Transkei and work in private practice. I feel the same but I’ve got so much to do at the moment.

Dear Alan,
We have just had a busy weekend. On Friday night we went to Peter (Neyland’s) wedding to Julie. They have known each other for a good while because she was an apprentice to Keith. She is a photo type setter. The wedding   was in the Roman Catholic church in Altona. The priest was very good and it was a good service. After the reception was at the clubrooms of the Altona hockey club. Bruce and Peter still play hockey. They have a very good club room as Altona must be one of the strongest hockey clubs in the state. Bruce’s wife Vivianne is expecting a baby on New Year’s Eve. Everything at the wedding went well except some awful “speeches”.

Saturday Pamela had our place in a mess with her last minute packing to go away. Finally she caught the plane Sunday morning. Neither Clare or Pamela took very much after all seeing they were going for 6 weeks. Now there is only Dad and myself here. It is very quiet even quieter still tonight as Dad has gone to a Deacon’s meeting at the church. We still haven’t got a minister and this meeting to see about another man who might be interested. Not very many are very keen on coming here.

Couldn’t help getting caught up I all the excitement of travelling when we took Pamela & Clare to the airport. I think maybe it would be fun to travel but we still don’t seem to be able to get anywhere. Although there were supposed to be extra planes there don’t seem to be many more seats. You never know we might get overt there.

The new shopping center they have been building behind us (on the service station site @ saw mill and old quarry) s opened last week. Was it hectic! I didn’t go and have a look until Saturday morning and it was still bedlam. Seems to have settled down now. I think it is an improvement but no really good shops I will still have to go to Footscray and Highpoint for clothes and furniture.  It will be good for small things and unfortunately not good for the figure. Darryl Lea chocolates have opened a shop there are several nut shops – I had better stay away.

Haven’t seen much of Beverley lately – she is getting ready for exams and finishing off her assignments. Lois came to the airport to see Pamela off. But we haven’t seen Anne since the school holidays. It was Benjamin’s birthday the same week as yours but I haven’t been able to say happy birthday to him. It was Beverley’s 21st birthday next week but she doesn’t want to do anything reckons she is too busy. The weather is now getting warm it was lovely today – but we haven’t had much rain but it is still more than you have had. Now again there is an article in the paper about the drought in Eastern Africa.  Look after yourself

Dear Alan
Your mother and I are rather interested in a holiday to South Africa but it does appear as though it would be difficult at Christmas time. As you know airline flights are rather limited and all flights at that time are booked out. We are on a waiting list but we have not heard anything yet although there has been news that both South African Airways and Qantas will be granted additional flights.  Even if the extra flights materalise we may not get on and they may be an unsuitable time. Also it may not be the best time over there, being mid-summer and height of the holiday season. The logic therefore suggests a later time and we have in mind may next year coinciding with the school holidays. The time would need to be three to four weeks to justify the expense and quiet adequate time to see as much as possible. We realise South Africa is a big place and there are important things to see. Hence to plan ahead carefully.

If you think going in May would be a good idea and it would fit in with your plans could you let us know as soon as possible so that we could scrap the idea of Christmas.

To save time perhaps you could phone us direct; Saturday or Sunday nights would normally be the best time - allowing for the time difference of course.

Pamela leaves on Sunday for a five week holiday to Canada. She is going to both the East and West coasts and crossing the Rockies but only touching USA on the way back. We finally saw slides of her Indian trip last week – just a year late!

The big news here was the opening yesterday of the new shopping center in the quarry at the back of our house. Many thousands of people turned up and traffic police had to man the intersection in Hampshire Road. Whether it will be a permanent success, time alone will tell, but it is a remarkable transformation from the old quarry hole.

We recently went along to the football finals again and saw some good matches although the grand final was very one-sided; Hawthorn winning easily with a very good display of team work.

The other big sporting news was Australia’s win in the America’s Cup yachting race. The euphoria generated here was incredible. A millionaire’s sport apparently means something if it is flooded with nationalism.

Hope you received your birthday present and herewith a belated birthday greeting.

We are going to your cousin Peter’s wedding on Friday; he is marrying a girl who works for Keith so they must know her well. Please phone if you are able.

                                                Kind regards Dad

Dear Alan,
I have been waiting to write to you when I had something to tell you about whether we come to South Africa. But we are no further ahead than when we started. I think your father would rather go at Christmas than next year. He says that we are going to see you more than the country. It would rather suit me better to come next year but he will not make up his mind. Last week the Government has allowed extra flights for Christmas to South Africa but it seems others have been cut out. We just don’t know if there is any chance of getting on one them. As you can see we are getting no where fast but maybe they will sort themselves out in a few weeks.

Last Saturday dad and Beverley and her boyfriend Paul went to the Grand Final of the football. I won’t say anything because you are getting a letter about it. On the same night was the American Cup but that was cancelled. It was held last night and Australia beat the Americans. Not very many Australians are really interested in yacht races but when we win after so many years there has been a bit more notice.

I went up to Trentham by myself on Saturday and spent the day trying to clear up branches that had fallen from the cypress trees.  I didn’t get very close. I am very strong and the branches were hard to me. Pamela and her friend Clare spent the weekend walking in the Grampians. She is off to Canada in two weeks. I think it will be cold. I am not sure why they chose to got to Canada It is such a big place you spend most of your time travelling.

Lois and Ken came over to our place Saturday afternoon to see the football final in colour – didn’t find anyone there – just left a note thanking us for the TV. I bet they didn’t stay for the whole match it sort of petered out in the second half.

Just watched the news tonight on TV all about the America Cup.  Last weekend it was all football today all yachting no wonder people say we are sports mad. But there would not have been all this fuss if we hadn’t won. Sorry I didn’t send a card for your birthday. I just couldn’t find one in Sunshine that I could possible send they were all so awful. I hope you had a good day. Just read a story in the Herald tonight the brother of the skipper of the yacht Australia 11 is a dentist in Melbourne and he had to cancel all of his appointments because he was so excited he couldn’t keep his hands still. In other parts of the world there could be disasters happen but we don’t hear about them. Maybe we live in a fool’s paradise.

Dear Alan,
If this letter gets to you could you please send a postcard or something so that I know.

I am writing mainly to wish you a happy birthday @ belated wishes if this letter here after your birthday.

Your birthday once again is on Grand Final day. The Grand final is between Hawthorn and Essendon who finished third and fourth on the ladder. All the regulars Carlton, Richmond and Collingwood did badly this year which was good to see. Most people are predicting Essendon to win.

Dennis, Benjamin and I went to the show on Friday night. We saw the animals and also the fireworks which was very good.

Benjamin will be 4 on the 28th of September. Time flies!  Next year he will got to kindergarten. This year he goes to an all-day childcare center which he enjoys.

The Wombat State Forest near Mum’s place is recovering well after the extensive bushfires. Even the wild animals e.g. Wombats and Wallabies are coming back though there is not much for them to eat. The grass and undergrowth is growing back and most of the gum trees have regenerated.

Dennis starts a new job tomorrow as an auto-electrician. He is really looking forward to it as it is much more interesting than factory work.

I hope all is well with you and your work

love Anne, Dennis and Benjamin XXXXXXXXXX

Dear Mum,
I’m sure I can get time off anytime I like. I’m also sure Christmas is the worst time for doing anything. I don’t think you could book a flight at such a time. It’s just not possible. Especially if you have to wait for passports and visas as well.

Also all the hotels and game parks would be very crowded.

You can come anytime you want but I’m sure you’ll find it will take longer than you think to organize  and that Feb/March is the best time & also better weather (not so hot).

                                                                Regards Alan

Dear Alan,
Just a short note because we have been thinking about what you said in your last letter about coming there to see South Africa while you are there. At the moment Dad is very enthusiastic about it. I’ve never seen him so keen for a while. Now we are here by ourselves he feels we could do more for ourselves. We know you would be working most of the time and we will have to go by ourselves but we wanted to find out if you had a few days free around Christmas time so we could see you. I am not saying that we will be coming but I would like to. The furtherest I have been since being married is Canberra so it is time I went and South Africa seems to be a very interesting place.

Could you please let us know as soon as possible what we should do and if and when you will be free. I am not sure what I would like to do except go on the Blue Train from Capetown. We have got the school holidays starting and I could make enquiries but we will not do anything definite until we hear from you. Could you please let us know as quickly as possible because I think there is only one plane a week to South Africa and you might need to book a good way ahead for around Christmas time.

Since I wrote last Lois and Ken have been for tea. Wasn’t too bad. Pamela is shifting from her flat next week.

I think I will go to bed early tonight. I can’t remember when I had a headache last time but it doesn’t feel too good. My back and neck are aching too so it might be flue. I can’t remember ever having it before. There is always a first time.

                                Love from Mum

Dear Alan,
I have got back your blender which Lois was using and should be able to send it this week. I’ll have a look what else is here but I am not sure what you would like. I will send this by surface mail should take about 6 weeks. There are a few more books and all your notes if you tell me what you want. The only book that is left which you might be interested is one called Community Dentistry all the other books are general not dentistry.

I don’t know what your weather is like but it is freezing here today. There is a very strong cold wind. I have got 5 layers of clothes on and I don’t feel warm. Lois left morning with a group of school children on a five day trip of Tasmania. If it was any colder than this it would be snowing. Actually the sun is chinning outside, no clouds but there is no warmth.

Our place is still a mess Dad has been painting the back bed room but because it was a light color it needed 3 coats and only was finished on Saturday. Looks fresh and bright. On Saturday Lois is leaving home to live in a house that she & Ken bought in Moonee Ponds. There was a bit of an argument because they are not getting married but I hope that is all over now.  It happens in so many families and in the end they usually get married so I don’t know why they don’t do it at the beginning and then everybody would be happier.

I think Pamela is going to shift into the old house that Ken has been living in. She wants more room and she didn’t really have very much room in her present flat. She is gradually learning to drive. Shouldn’t be much longer before she gets her license. But I think she will still use the train to go to work because she will be handy to the station and I don’t think she has enough money for a car. Spends it all on her holidays.  I hope everything is going all right for you.

Dear Mum,
I think you may have misunderstood. I had a small cardboard box containing a few text books (dental materials, pharmacology, a yellow book and possible a book on anatomy by Last). There were a few notes on dentistry. Nothing else. Maybe some cooking utensils were in the same box. What I want if possible is the textbooks, notes, machine for cutting vegetables and a recipe book that goes with it. If you want send over the names of any books and I’ll tell you if I need them.

I haven’t heard the word native for ages. But I will put down on paper which natives are what. They say that in SA a liberal is someone who calls his kaffirs coons. Or alternatively a liberal is someone who says the so-called “homelands”. I will try and ignore all this so-called and apostrophic rubbish.

The blacks of southern Africa are divided by language into two main groups.

                SOTHO –North Sotho – Lebowa
                                –Tswana – Bophuthatswana/Botswana
                                –South Sotho – Qwa Qwa/Lesotho
                                –Uhavenda –Venda
                NGUNI  –Xhosa – Transkei, Ciskei
                                –Zulu – KwaZulu
–Swazi – Swaziland, Kangwane
–Shangaan – Ganzankulu, Mozambique
–Ndebele – Kwandebele, Zimbabwe

Swaziland, Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe are former British colonies. (nee Swaziland, Bechuanaland, Basutoland, Rhodesia).  Transkei, Bophutswana, Venda and Ciskei are called republics or independent national states. The other six are called self-governing territories within the Republic of South Africa.

The Union of South Africa = the five republics

In the 19th C a dialect of the Xhosa tribe was written down. Nowadays all the blacks around here are called Xhosa. But things are not that simple. All the black tribes were in a constant state of migration and movement before the whites arrived. The Nguni tribes were slowly moving down the east coast as the white settlers were moving up the east coast. At one stage there was a distinct and well-defined boundary between the white and black areas between East London and Port Elizabeth. As the Nguni moves downwards they eliminated all bushmen from this area. This boundary between white and black areas was a source of constant wars, cattle pouching etc. other tribes split & began migrating north again ie. The Ndebele in Zimbabwe.

The main tribes that came down furtherest were the Thembu, Xhosa, Pondo, Bomvana, Xesibe, Bhaca, Hlubi and Fingo. These are the main tribes that are known as the Xhosa. In this area is mainly the Fingo tribe though the official language everywhere is Xhosa.

Because the Xhosa language was written down recently it is a language were everything is pronounced just as it is read. Though pronouncing it is difficult because of the number of click sounds in the words.

As for the Hottentots. The early white settlers encountered two indigenous groups. There are a few remaining Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert (see Laurens Van der Post) and the Bushmen in the mountainous areas are extinct (qv). The Hottentots are now either extinct or incorporated into the colored community. The Cape Colored are a mixture of early white settlers, Malays, Hottentots and even a few blacks. There are two main sub-groups – the Cape Malays and the Griquas.   The Griquas are of Hottentot–white ancestry are found around Kimberley.

It’s axiomatic   that the Afrikaaners are frightened their culture is going to disappear into the melting pot along with quite a few other groups. This fear is not unfounded. There are 2.5 million Coloreds. The majority speak Afrikaans and the vast majority get their white blood from the Afrikaaners. They say the first Colored was born 9 months after the first Dutchman arrived in 1652.

Such things wouldn’t matter if one was a South African first and an Afrikaaner second but things are rare or as they say the Afrikaaner is more tribalistic than the blacks. Such is life.

Meanwhile the strangest hit show of the year is the Paul Hogan Show. Everybody wants to give me the credit or congratulate me.
