From Melbourne (Mum) : 26.10.83

From Melbourne
26.10.83
Dear Alan,
Hope everything is going alright where you are. We still are seeing in the papers and hearing about the drought and the lack of food all down the east coast of Africa. South Africa is not usually mentioned but all the other countries are included including Lesotho and Swaziland so it still can’t be too good where you are.

I just sent a parcel by surface mail which should reach you by Christmas. Hope it does. It’s very hard to know what to send and no-one has any ideas. You do what you like with the items keep some for yourself and give some of them away if you like.

Pamela has already sent us two cards one from Toronto and one from Montreal didn’t tell us very much but we know that she is there.  Also send over a couple of Canadian books for Beverley’s and my birthday. Last Friday night which was the actual day of her birthday Dad and I and Auntie Grace and Win took Beverley with us to a rather posh restaurant in Footscray (yes there is one!). It was very nice but a bit dear not the sort of place you could afford very often. We might have a get together of some of our relatives after Beverley has finished exams and Pamela is back. I’m not sure how it is going to work seeing that Pamela, Lois and Anne are not talking to each other. Well we can try!

Had afternoon tea last Sunday at Auntie Grace’s when Evelyn and Bill were there with Jenny and her baby. He’s a year old now and just walking. Evelyn and Bill are off to New Zealand in Nov to see Ian and to have a holiday touring around too. Evelyn is reasonably well but she had to take everything slowly.

We haven’t made any arrangements yet about next year because we are still waiting to hear whether you think it alright. If not we will not come.

I see in today’s paper that 2 groups that are prohibited in South Africa are going to be allowed to have offices in Australia – SWAPO and another group of Africans  I can’t remember the initials but it starts with NA. Looks like it getting harder to get to South Africa.

Last week there were elections in Queensland and everybody was saying that Bjelke was finished but he won with his own party –Liberals were slaughtered – Labor made few gains. What everybody thinks of  Bjelke he certainly knows how to manipulate the system and he over 70.

                                                                                Love from Mum
